Bio

Hiroyo Kaneko, a photographer originally from Aomori, Japan, and now based in Oakland, CA, discovered her passion for photography at 23 when she inherited her father’s old Pentax camera. Her work delves into the relationship between subjects and their surroundings, drawing from her experiences as an immigrant in the US. She holds an MFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in French Literature from Meiji Gakuin University.
Kaneko’s talent has been recognized with awards, including the Santa Fe Prize for Photography in 2009 and being a finalist in the Philadelphia Museum of Art Photography Portfolio Competition in 2012. In 2022, she received the 32nd Society of Photography, Japan Award for her series, Appearance. Her photographs have been exhibited at renowned venues in the US and Japan, including the MIMOCA Museum in Kagawa, SFMOMA, and the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
